Cancer is probably one of the most feared words in our world today. Our society is bombarded with headlines and stories about so many celebrities and unsuspecting Americans who are caught off guard by such a diagnosis.
There is another side to the story, however. There can be a silver lining hidden in that diagnosis. I am in no way disregarding the pain and suffering that is unavoidable, but for those who choose to see it, there are hidden lessons to be learned: strength. growth. self-knowledge, compassion, and most especially, love.
I have created a book of stories and energetic portraits of 100 cancer survivors who tell powerful accounts of how they grew from their disease. Cancer’s Silver Lining is a book of hope and transformations; an emotional portrayal of the strength that arises from the depths of adversity. The stories and portraits range from a 2-year-old boy to a woman still loving life at 100.
For survivors, this is a book about hope and inspiration; for others it is about education; and for me it is about the struggle to find meaning in what popular culture thinks of as a death sentence.
