I am perhaps best known for my photographs of Jewish communities around the world. My first book, chronicling the Jewish communities of the former Soviet Union, Cuba, Jerusalem, New York and Los Angeles entitled, From The Corners Of The Earth was published, with an introduction by Chaim Potok, by The Jewish Publication Society. I recently completed a manuscript entitled Beyond Cancer: Portraits of Hope, which focuses on cancer survivors who have not let a diagnosis of cancer prevent them from living their lives to its fullest. Indeed, in some cases, the diagnosis has served as an impetus to better their lives. The core idea was to interview and photograph a diverse group of 100 people for whom this is true. The project is now complete and I am looking for a publisher. For my 2nd book, I collaborated with The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience, in Mississippi, on a project depicting Jewish life in the “Deep South”. A volume of this work entitled Shalom Y’all: Images of Jewish Life in the American South, with an introduction by Alfred Uhry, was published, by Algonquin Books. In addition, I collaboratedwith Chapman University and the 1939 Club, in Los Angeles, on a project entitled Holocaust Survivors: The Indestructible Spirit where I produced 100 photographs of Holocaust survivors in southern California. An exhibition and book are in preparation.
My photographs have been exhibited in major museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe and Israel. My work has also appeared in a wide variety of publications and is found in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Mississippi Museum of Art, The International Center for Photography, The Jewish Museum, The Chicago Art Institute, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Skirball Museum, The Israel Museum, in Jerusalem, and the Museum of the Diaspora, in Tel-Aviv. The Pucker Gallery in Boston exhibits and travels my photographic portfolios. PhotoEdit, Inc., agency represents my commercial work. I live in Los Angeles with my wife and two sons, where I am undoubtedly the only freelance photographer with a Ph.D. in sociology. I can be reached via email at bill@billaron.com. |
